CAST OF CHARACTERS
AUDITIONING
We are looking for singers, dancers, and band members to create this ensemble of multitalented freaks. There are many ensemble numbers and several smaller roles, and all leads will join the band, choir, or ensemble when their character permits. So here are the lead roles (who have one or more solo or duet songs). All roles and understudies are open for the September tour. View our upcoming audition dates.
- Bud
(music theatre or rock tenor, 20-35, nice guy)
A naďve and horny newbie who has come to the playa for the first time with his resistant girlfriend Brook. His mind will be blown, but not in the ways he expects.
- Brook
(rocker who can play it square, 20-35)
The girlfriend of Bud, she is resistant to the playa, and has come only to please her guy. Their relationship is rocky. She has a fiery temper to boot, and sings some rage rockers so really needs to be able to sing powerfully.
- Janet
(strong singer, maybe folkrocker, plays guitar a plus, 45-65)
The third newbie. She is a middle-aged former Deadhead and folksinger who, until recently, has led a quiet middle-class life that was blasted open when her husband left her. She was supposed to join a friend on the playa, but when the friend flaked, she decided to come anyway. Ideally, an acoustic guitar player.
- Dr. Vulcano
(strongly charismatic performer and physical presence, any age)
A machine artist, potentially with a steampunk twist. He should be charismatic, tortured, physical, and be comfortable with power tools.
- Polylicious
(can sing country western style, speak w/a twang, should be able to self accompany on guitar or accordion, any age)
An “oldbie”—a newbie the previous year who has returned a total convert and enthusiast. A playa version of a “camp counselor” who shows up to the newbie’s camp and helps them learn the ropes—including the erotic minefield that is the playa.
- Geekbird
(nerdy, guy who can act, does not have to sing... but who can come up with and execute an actual interactive technology project)
Geekbird is a “man with a project,” a psychedelic tech-freak maker guy who is so nerdy and weird most people don’t know how to deal with him.
Janet sees his special genius, and helps him realize his project.
- Shamonica
(strong, weird, charismatic presence and singer, any age)
A dread-headed freak who is half pagan witch and half Dada-ist Dionysian. Her shtick is to mystically divine which drugs are best for each individual that night, and she turns on some of the newbies.
- Candyflip
(crazy Nina Hagen/Yma Sumac singer and presence)
A sassy-sexy art car diva who shows the newbies around the playa for the first time.
- Fairyboots
(powerful spoken word performer, rocker a plus, possibly has an accent, both seductive and beyond conventional sexiness)
A strong-willed rapper-chick with an apocalyptic sense of hedonistic urgency. She seduces Brook away from Bud.
- Sheriff
(Johnny Cash bass)
A local sheriff who sings a country-rock highlight tune about kicking the freaks off the playa circa 1996.
- Stetson
(Britten-style opera tenor 35-65)
A searching, slightly awkward character inspired by Burning Man's visionary founder, always wearing his ubiquitous hat.
- Mustachio
(rocker/crooner baritone 35-65, highly charismatic and maybe a bit Tom Jones)
A composite character inspired by several of the "other" early founders and instigators, many of whom left the event in the 1990s.
- The Three Graces
(three strong female singers who can do both classical and Balkan-style vocals, any age)
Three powerful women, one of whom will participate in a powerful fire ritual, who represent the hardworking group of people who work year round to make Burning Man happen.
